We might be well beyond the Modernist narrative of design history. We might think that we have left the dominance of (white, Western, male) ‘heroes’ in the narrative behind. But this still lingers, tainting the way by which design is presented in magazines and on TV. Meanwhile, a vigorous movement has recently grown that provides fresh impetus, not only to critiquing that outdated version but demands that we think deeply about the variety of cultural, political, social and environmental practices that design is part of. Decolonising design challenges first world dominance and orthodoxies. So, how might it change the global landscape of design? Does decolonising design open onto other questions of representation and agency? Is it liberating or does it create new sub-orthodoxies? What would decolonising design look like in Finland? We shall discuss these and many other questions.
